Exploring Grand Isle’s Top Campgrounds and Parks

While there are many camping and outdoor spots to choose from, several stand out from the rest.

1. Grand Isle State Park

Grand Isle State Park is one of the top destinations for camping and enjoying the great outdoors in this gorgeous area. Its location on the shore of Lake Champlain makes it perfect for enjoying a variety of water sports, while the sandy beach is ideal for sitting back, taking in the wind and the waves, or enjoying a little birdwatching. The park offers 115 tent/RV sites, 36 lean-to sites, and four cabin sites, allowing you to choose the type of camping that best suits your needs.

2. Burton Island State Park

Burton Island is accessible only by boat or ferry, which allows you to truly get away from it all and connect with nature. It offers a smaller campground, with 14 tent sites, 26 lean-tos, and four remote tent sites. Explore the area’s beautiful hiking trails or find a quiet spot for swimming or your favorite water sports in this stunning natural setting.

3. Grand Isle Recreation Park

When you’re not looking for an overnight experience in the great outdoors, but still want the opportunity to get outside and relax, Grand Isle Recreation Park offers a variety of facilities that cater to your needs. It offers picnic tables, a playground for the kids to explore, and sports fields that are perfect for practice or just playing with friends.

South Hero, North Hero, and Beyond

South Hero and North Hero are the towns located on islands in Lake Champlain. As you explore the local area, take a look at these popular locations and consider how they can enhance your visit.

4. Island Line Trail

The Island Line Trail offers 13.4 miles of walking and biking opportunities, featuring gorgeous scenic views of the lake and mountains. There are several access points, including Causeway Park and Allen Point. The trail follows the path of the former Island Line Railroad, which connected coastal markets in New England with the Great Lakes. If you want to travel the full length of the trail, you’ll need to take a ferry to cross.

5. Snow Farm Vineyard and Distillery

Snow Farm Vineyard and Distillery offers craft wine and spirits straight from the heart of the Champlain Islands. There are regular events at the vineyard, whether you’re looking for an exciting concert from the Summer Concert Series, which is free to the public, or an art workshop to help you soak in the natural beauty of the area. At the same time, you tap into your artistic side.

6. Knight Point State Park

North Hero helps visitors to the Lake Champlain islands relax and enjoy all the benefits of a slower pace and quieter lifestyle—and Knight Point State Park is no exception. This beautiful park features a rocky shoreline that remains undisturbed, home to several rare local plant species. At Knight Point, you can enjoy a short walking trail directly to the point, a swimming beach, and convenient boat rental.

7. North Hero Village

If you’re staying in the Lake Champlain area, take the time to visit North Hero Village. This quiet, charming small town includes several local B&Bs and inns, perfect for quiet days and relaxing experiences. Explore the town and visit local shops and restaurants to fully experience that enchanting small-town feel. North Hero is in the process of expanding and investing in tourism and infrastructure, but it strives to maintain the charm and history that continue to draw locals and visitors alike.
