Bike the Burlington Greenway and Beyond

One of the outdoor recreation highlights of Vermont is access to the famed Burlington bike path known as the Burlington Greenway. The paved bike path is a 13-mile trail that winds alongside the magnificent Lake Champlain. You get to enjoy stunning views of the water and the Adirondacks in one fell swoop. The bike path was originally a part of the Central Vermont Railway, but went through a conversion in the 1970s. Today, thousands of cyclists travel along the bike path each year to enjoy the beauty of the most famous lake in the state.

The bike path connects the beaches in Burlington and continues onto the Champlain Islands. Champlain Islands bike path rentals are available through several vendors, and additional amenities along the route include public restrooms and water fountains.

Explore the Colchester Causeway and Champlain Islands

If you’re looking for gravel trails, you can continue from the Burlington path to bike across the Colchester Causeway. The causeway ends at South Hero and is considered a relatively easy route for all skill levels. Biking is so popular in the South Hero area that you can take a bike ferry to the Champlain Islands for more ride opportunities. The ferry helps bridge the 200-foot cut comfortably. The ferry runs from spring to fall and relies on donations from passengers to keep operating.

Remember to pack plenty of snacks and water while exploring the bike path from Burlington to South Hero. If you choose to take the entire route, your ride will take at least half a day. The Vermont weather is unpredictable, so dressing in layers will likely offer the best protection.
